I was recently introduced to bible journaling through my work and at first, it was a foreign concept I didn’t understand. Growing up, I was taught that you could highlight in your bible, maybe even write something in the margin but that was it. This was the holy book and it needed to be treated with respect.
When I saw people coloring and even painting in their bible, I was dumbfounded! This goes against everything that was ingrained in my head, but at the same time made so much sense.
I HATE reading. Fun fact, I failed the reading standardized test in Texas when I was in the 5th grade. Because of this, I was forced into tutoring and into these reading tactics to help me become a better reader when it made me hate reading even more. So reading my bible has always been a daunting task. Before I dove into bible journaling, really the only time I was spending in the word was through my verse of the day on my bible app.
Along with hating to read I’m a level 10 fidgeter. I have a hard time sitting still, so often times in sermons while I’m taking notes I’ll doodle or chew gum, move every two seconds in my seat.
The pioneer of the bible journaling community, Shanna Noel, had a similar issue and didn’t enjoy spending time in the word so she decided to put her creativity to good use and illustrate her thoughts in feeling her bible.
Bible Journaling 101
Bible journaling is all about illustrating your faith. So I found a great journaling bible to start this journey. I wanted something fun and cute and would help entice me to get in the word. Next and this was the most mind-blowing thing, I picked up some items that walk you through bible journaling.
If you look up bible journaling on Pinterest you’ll see tons of amazing art and it can be a little overwhelming. Several sites sell these bible journaling kits to help guide you in the beginning. It includes everything from scripture prompts to washi tape to thought starters. This is the perfect way to get started and really help you go deeper in the word.
Otherwise, if you are like me you’ll sit down to read your bible and not even know where to begin. This has helped me so much and honestly, made me want to get in the word because it’s so fun!
Each verse is different to me and depending on my mood, my creativity can vary. Some days I want to pull out all my stamps and stickers and some days it’s simply just writing in the margins what God has put on my heart. That’s what is so fun, each verse looks different depending on what God is telling you.
I do keep a separate bible for bible journaling, so if there is a scripture that gets covered up I can still reference it and I don’t want to take bible journaling one to church with me.
