This post was written by my fiance Jared, from A Gentleman’s Providence. I thought it would be fun to get his opinion on this topic, so I really hope you enjoy what he has to say!
While Angela and I’s style haven’t always blended well together, I think we are in a place now where it is easy for the both of us to match. When I say match, I don’t mean we are wearing the same color or pattern, though this does accidentally happen quite often, but that our styles mesh well together. To elaborate a little, when Angela wants to wear jeans, I don’t throw on a suit. While that is a simple example, it may not seem as easy for some in instances like engagement pictures, weddings, family or Christmas photos, or simply everyday life. But, it can be!
If your man isn’t as fashion forward as some, I would suggest going shopping together. It can be overwhelming, so find a one stop shop like Bonobos. Bonobos makes it easy because they have good fitting high quality clothing (no need to drag your significant other to the tailor!) The closest Bonobos store to us is in Dallas, and although we have popped in a couple times, Angela and I do a lot of online shopping. Luckily, Bonobos offers free shipping and free returns. You can even make it a date night if you are shopping for a specific event. Open up a bottle of wine and do a little shopping from your couch.
Here are a few more tips when planning outfits for situations like above.
Discuss a Color Palette or Theme
Think colors that pair well together, but not the same color. If you are unsure what colors compliment each other, I would stick neutrals or even check out a little color theory with the color wheel. Angela and I try to avoid the matchy-matchy look and look for pieces that coordinate together. For example, if I am wearing green and maroon, Angela could wear something navy and brown.
Put Together Outfit or Items Beforehand to Compare
Angela and I like to hang all of our outfits together (i.e. shirts, pants, belts, shoes, etc.) and take a picture of them. That way you can share them with each other and go back a few days later to make sure you still like the look (this does require pre-planning).
Make Sure Your Combination is Relevant to Your Situation
If you’re taking pictures or simply going a date in the fall or you want your look to be timeless, it might not be the best idea to go outside of the house with a bright floral dress or a pink sport coat.
I tend to wear plenty of classic items with one lead singer in the band, meaning a lot of toned down items with one key feature. This may be an interesting belt or tie or an interesting layer with unique pattern.
Below are a few visual examples to help get a better idea.
